So the festive season is upon us. Time for quality moments with the family, enjoying the sound of Christmas carols and eating a mince pie or two. As we say, it’s the most wonderful time of the year.
For some though, this time of year is painful and lonely. There are many of us today that don’t have their family around them. This can be for any number of reasons, from bereavement, to low income and even loss of mobility. These reasons and being alone at Christmas seem amplified by the celebrations of others. It is a completely normal emotion, however feelings like this should turn their attention to the things in life that make them happy. Refrain from focusing on the things you aren’t doing, instead focus on something that is fulfilling and enjoyable for you. Here at Mobility Plus, we’ve put together our top 5 tips for getting you through the festive season positively.
1. Continue enjoying your hobbies
Your hobbies provide you with pleasure and happiness all through the year so why not continue doing the things that make you feel this way. If you don’t have a regular hobby, you should find something that you enjoy doing even if this is rare. This will make you realise what really matters in life and how to overcome those negative thoughts and emotions.
2. Volunteer or do charity work
Doing something for someone else at any time of the year, not just at Christmas, can leave a feeling of fulfilment and even makes you forget about your own worries and concerns. It is very difficult to have negative thoughts when you are helping others.
3. Reach out to someone else in similar situation
You might be surprised to find that there are many people in a similar situation to you. Why not reach out to them and share your time, giving them the much-needed company that you also need.
4. Get in touch with local groups for shared interests
There are many local groups around the UK that join together to enjoy a coffee morning, day trips or lunches. They are often full of like-minded people where there at least some people with similar interests you that you can converse with.
5. Research in to your community transport options
For some, the loneliness can come from lack of transport or lack of mobility, but if you do the research and open your mind, you will notice that there are lots of affordable and sometimes free transport options available in your local area. There are often collection volunteers in many areas that will drive you from A to B on a completely voluntary basis.
